NAASA Scholarships

The Native American Art Studies Association is pleased to announce the availability of scholarships to attend the 2001 conference. NAASA will award the Allan Houser Scholarship, the Richard Conn Scholarship and two General Scholarships (one in the name of Oscar Howe). Each award includes $500 plus the conference registration fee ($50) and membership dues ($35).

All scholarship applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Applicant is a new, current or lapsed member of NAASA
  • Applicant has not received financial support from NAASA to attend either of the past two conferences (Berkeley, 1997; Victoria, 1999).

General Scholarships
NAASA General Scholarships are intended to support NAASA members presenting papers at the conference. The scholarship committee will grant the awards based on the merits of the applicantís presentation topic and ability to perform meaningful research in his or her chosen field, and financial need.

Allan Houser Scholarship
The Allan Houser Scholarship supports Native American students attending the NAASA conference. Allan Houser, a recipient of the National Medal of Arts in 1992, was recognized as a dedicated educator and accomplished artist in both painting and sculpture. Houserís legacy continues to inspire countless future artists. Preference will be given to applicants presenting papers.

Richard Conn Scholarship
The Richard Conn Scholarship was established to enable young professionals, both scholars and artists, to attend NAASA conferences. As Curator of Native Arts for over 20 years at the Denver Art Museum and a long-standing participant and NAASA Board member, Conn was committed to encouraging and mentoring young professionals in the field of Native Art studies. Preference will be given to applicants presenting papers.

Applications for all awards must include:

  • A cover letter describing financial need.
  • Current curriculum vitae.
  • If presenting a paper, a copy of the abstract. If the paper has been submitted to a session please indicate the name of the session and session chair.

Applications for the Allan Houser Scholarship must also include:

  • Demonstration of tribal affiliation with a United States or Canadian tribe/nation/band.
  • Proof of enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate program of higher education in a field related to Native American art history (copy of current registration, student i.d. card, etc.). Please indicate projected date of graduation and degree in the cover letter.

Late applications will not be considered. Applicants will be notified of award decisions by July 13, 2001. Awards will be made by check upon registering for the conference.
