Incorporating Traditional Care Techniques in Collections Management of Tribal Collections

Speakers will address how cultural concerns are incorporated into standard curatorial practices in museums holding tribal artifacts. The juxtaposition of Western and Tribal value systems is examined as tribal museum professionals seek both to honor the spirit of the object while also ensuring its physical safety. Challenges to traditional care techniques and handling of contaminated objects will be explored. Restrictions and qualifications that tribes request concerning museum personnel who handle sacred/sensitive objects will also be discussed. The validity of indigenous knowledge as a scientific alternative is an essential component of discussions between community scholars and museum professionals negotiating new curatorial practices.
