Native American Art and Early 20th Century Curio Enterprises

Curio enterprises handling Native American material were common across North America during the first decades of the twentieth century, especially in the west, where tourists traveled to see landscape and Indians and to purchase their cultural arts. Recent studies have begun to flesh out the histories of some of these businesses. This session will include papers on several different curio enterprises, their origins, strategies and influence. Discussion will also address the nature and potentials of research on curio operations and the types of insights such studies are contributing to a better understanding of Native American art.
