Register Now for the Portland Conference
October 24-27, 2001

The 12th biennial NAASA conference*, celebrating the 20th anniversary of this organization, will be held in Portland, Oregon, October 24-27, 2001. Thanks to all the members who have submitted paper abstracts and to the NAASA Program Committee (Kate Duncan, chair, Nancy Mithlo, Emma Hansen and Candace Greene) for planning a full and exciting conference schedule (see the preliminary program in this newsletter). Events begin on Wednesday, October 24th with a pre-conference trip that features a drive past Mount Hood and a visit to the Museum at Warm Springs. There will also be a welcome reception at the Paramount Hotel from 7:00-9:00 pm that evening. The conference sessions take place at the Portland Art Museum beginning at 8:30 am on Thursday, October 25th. Please renew your membership, register and sign up for the Saturday evening banquet using the form in this newsletter. Remember only NAASA members are eligible to attend the conference so please be sure your membership is current.

The Paramount Hotel is located at 808 SW Taylor St. Portland, Oregon 97205; the reservation and information number is: 800-426-0670. Conference rates are $89 per night plus tax for a single or a double room. Remember to ask for the Native American Art Studies conference rates in order to get this special price. For those driving, please note that there is an $18 per day valet parking fee with alternate parking within a block from the hotel. Please note that there are a limited number of double rooms available so be sure to make your reservations early.

*In 1981 the Native American Art Studies Association was created at a conference held at Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona. Though the NAASA Newsletter Vol. 12, no. 4 stated that the conference held two years ago in Victoria was the 12th conference, that was historically inaccurate, since it counted back to the conference held in Albuquerque, New Mexico, before NAASA was established.
